Costliest fraud in £2.8bn local government finance 'hole' is the easiest to tackle, says Callcredit

Tenancy fraud is the costliest single fraud for local government, costing £900m each year (source: National Fraud Office) and represents nearly a third (32%) of the estimated £2.8bn hole that exists in local government finances. Comprising the illegal subletting of social housing, it prevents vulnerable citizens from getting access to much-needed social housing and is therefore not just the costliest but the most pernicious too.

But unlike other types of public sector fraud, this fraudulent behaviour is relatively easy to stop as the necessary information is available through a number of different data sources including the Electoral Roll, claims Andrew Davis, Director of Public Sector at Callcredit, the UK’s second largest Credit Reference Agency (CRA).

Last night, Callcredit Marketing Solutions was ‘highly commended’ in the coveted ‘New product, service or innovation’ category at the Financial Services Forum Awards for the use of its unique profitability tool, nGauge, by credit card giant Santander Cards.

nGauge Profitability has multiple applications in customer marketing and has been built for four key markets: Credit Cards, Loans, Home Shopping and Mobile Telecoms. Additional nGauge risk tools are also available to support credit pre-screening against current risk and future credit trends.

Callcredit warns online shoppers to keep their personal details wrapped up this Christmas

As the busiest time of the year for internet shopping gets into full swing, festive shoppers are warned to be on their guard against online fraud and bogus retail websites.

New research released today by the credit and fraud experts at Callcredit Information Group reveals that although 76 per cent of web users will be buying Christmas gifts via the internet this year, a large number of them are running the risk of their personal details falling into the hands of unscrupulous fraudsters, who then run up debts in their name.
