Yorkshire finance companies join forces to tackle cancer05 September 2006
Yorkshire's financial companies are holding a 'Wear-it-Blue' 5-a-side football tournament on 9 September to raise awareness and funding for prostate cancer.
The tournament will see 16 teams from across the region battle it out to raise the 'Wear-it-Blue' trophy at GOALS football centre in Leeds.
In addition to the football tournament participating companies will hold a 'Wear-it-Blue Friday' on 8 September and the money raised at both will be split between two cancer charities: The Prostate Cancer Charity and Cancer Research UK.
Callcredit organiser Gavin McNaughton said:
"We raised more than £2,000 through our 'Wear-it-Blue' challenge last year and this year promises to be even more successful with double the number of teams entering.
One in 11 men will get prostate cancer, however it isn't something men like to talk about. But football is something men do like to talk about so this tournament is a great way to increase awareness and raise money while having fun playing footie."
Skipton Building Society, HML, Callcredit, Accenture and the Halifax are all providing teams for the football and will be supported by their work restaurant's where a 'blue menu' will feature on 'Wear-it-Blue' Friday.
Everyone who makes a donation for wearing an item of blue clothing will be given an information leaflet about men's cancers as well as a ribbon badge.
Companies that would like to participate in next year's event can contact Susanna Fieldhouse, Marketing Manager at Callcredit on 0113 244 1555.
Men in the UK have an average lifetime risk of one in 11 of contracting prostate cancer. There are over 32,000 new diagnoses in the UK each year. In the UK one man dies every hour from prostate cancer. More information is available at www.prostate-cancer.org.uk or www.cancerresearchuk.org.
The football tournament will kick off at 1200 on Saturday 9 September at GOALS, Redcote Lane, Kirkstall Road Leeds. The prize giving is scheduled for approximately 1530.
Callcredit will be hosting a 'blues' musical session in its cafè on Friday 8 September between 1230 and 1330.
