Perform ID checks on new employees as part of a DBS check (previously CRB checks)
What is a DBS check?
Whenever you apply for a job in healthcare or working with children, you’ll be subjected to a DBS check, which many people know as its former name, CRB check.
Your DBS checking will either follow route 1 or route 2 and if you’re subjected to a route 2 check, the DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) will require an external organisation to complete the ID validation. In 2013, the DBS appointed Callcredit as a supplier of Route 2 ID Validation services.
What is ID validation?
At its most basic definition, ID validation means checking someone is who they say they are.
While this is important in most industries, it is particularly important in finance, healthcare, education and childcare to make sure the job applicant is not hiding any previous offences by lying about their identity.
So whether it is company policy, your duty of care or the law that you carry out these checks, it will be a DBS check that you’ll need. And remember, this system has replaced CRB checks.
Who needs DBS (previously CRB) checks?
DBS screening, formerly known as CRB checking, is designed to verify the identities of people applying for work in the welfare sector. This includes:
- Childcare assistants
- Prison officers
- Foster carers
The system is designed to protect vulnerable children and adults from people with criminal convictions, and making it harder for individuals to hide their criminal record by changing their name.
How does ID validation work?
The first part of the DBS check is a simple identity check. However, not all applicants have the necessary documentation to follow Route 1 of the DBS check. In this case, they will have to follow route 2 and an external organisation like Callcredit will be called upon to check their identity. You can do this using Callcredit’s CallID product.
CallID works by confirming an individual’s identity using a range of quality data sources, including doing checks at their previous address. All the user needs to do is enter the following known details about the applicant:
- Date of birth
- Any other name they may be known under
CallID will simply return a pass or refer result along with a list of the datasets checked to enable you to make an immediate decision.
What information does ID validation check?
Callcredit’s CallID product does not just check electronic data. It can also be used to validate paper based documents. So if you have any doubts regarding the legitimacy of ID documentation, a quick check will validate them.
