Tackling Tenancy Fraud
Conference
22 Nov 2011
Aims & Objectives
"Tenancy fraud costs this country billions
of pounds, but it's not just the money that's wasted ... tenancy
fraud means that tens-of-thousands of people who could otherwise be
housed are losing out. We cannot afford to ignore this
problem."
Grant Shapps, Minister for Housing, December
2010
At a time when demand for social housing is outstripping supply it is estimated that up to 50,000 homes may be unlawfully sublet. Capita's National Tackling Tenancy Fraud Conference provides the ideal opportunity to assess the progress of councils and housing providers following the Government's crackdown, launched in December 2010.
With £19 million made available to bolster the efforts of those councils most active in this area, there have been a range of local initiatives put in place including dedicated housing officers to investigate allegations, and tenancy audits to ensure that lawful tenants are living in the property.
Timed to coincide with the launch of the Local Authority Fraud Strategy from the National Fraud Authority, this conference will include strategic insights from Central Government and partner agencies as well as showcasing examples of local innovation.
Key issues being discussed on the day include:
- Examining alternative avenues of provision and improving efficiency through partnership working
- How best to use and share data to identify incidences of fraud
- Raising awareness amongst both frontline staff and the public to encourage their buy-in to tackle tenancy fraud
- Conducting robust investigations and reclaiming housing stock
Tenancy fraud is the most significant area of fraud facing local government, attend this event to bolster your preventative and investigative programmes in order to create savings and release homes to those that genuinely need them.
