An MP has called for the creation of a service which would act to combat cyber crime issues such as online financial and identity fraud.
Mark Pritchard, Conservative MP for the Wrekin, has suggested that a government-run 'cyber crime agency' could serve the whole of the UK in regulating internet crime and acting upon instances of fraud, deception and virus spreading.
According to Silicon.com, he told an adjournment debate of his vision for a unified, central service which could serve to provide a valuable one-stop resource for the nation.
He said: "The agency should be a unified national cyber-security agency, which would be a single point of cyber-security information, guidance and advice for the nation.
"The rise in aggressive viruses and cyber-security threats is a clear and present danger to Britain's national security. It is also a threat to Britain's economic well-being."
Some critics, though - such as Barry Gardiner, under-secretary of state for trade and industry - believe that the government should not be handed such regulatory powers on its own and that it should work with businesses to find solutions.
