A new handheld biometric device aimed at fighting identity fraud has been developed.
The device, which is half the size of a mobile phone, provides the industry's highest level of security using multi-factor authentication, claims its makers.
"The need to stop the thieves who are wreaking havoc on our businesses, our society and our personal lives has become more and more critical with each day," said Rob Morrison, CEO of US-based designers id-Confirm.
"Because it includes not only the biometric authentication device, but also the entire infrastructure organisations need to get the solution up and running very quickly, it overcomes the obstacles that business and government previously faced with biometrics."
The id-Confirm SecureLink System includes a fingerprint reader through which the concerned customer registers by scanning their finger across the device in an environment controlled by the issuing authority.
A mathematised representation of the fingerprint is stored on the device, which the customer keeps with them. Whenever a credit card, ATM, on-line banking or other transaction occurs, the customer must scan their fingerprint to ensure it matches the fingerprint of the person enrolled on the device.
