Mortgage borrowing will soon pass the £1 trillion mark (£1,000 billion), reveal statistics from the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML).
However, despite the huge sum owed by mortgage holders, it is small compared to the £3.6 trillion value of unmortgaged property held by UK homeowners.
Home ownership has increased from 60 to 70 per cent of the population over the past 20 years, but there is still a gap between homeowners and those that wish to own, with 80 per cent of people wanting to be homeowners.
"The £1 trillion threshold is clearly a landmark but it does not have any particular significance for policy-makers or others. Although it is a milestone, it will perhaps soon be forgotten as home-ownership and mortgage lending continue to grow further," commented CML director general Michael Coogan.
