Middle class Britons are more likely to save for the future than working-class Britons, reveals a new survey.
Around three-tenths of those Britons who regard themselves as middle class say they save for the long term shows the survey by building society Liverpool Victoria, compared to two in ten of those who regard themselves as working class.
The number of Britons who regard themselves as middle class has risen by 44 per cent since 1966, according to the figures, with 43 per cent of the population now seeing themselves as middle class and 53 per cent as working class.
More debt is owed by the middle classes, with an average amount owed of £3,267, compared to £2,770 for the working classes, says Liverpool Victoria, although the overall debt burden for the working classes is higher due to a lower average income.
"Saving regularly for the future is something that we should all be doing more of and we would encourage everyone to try to put something by, if only a little and often, to help build up a nest egg for the future," said Liverpool Victoria's head of corporate communications, Nigel Snell.
