Identity crime is on the rise, with UK fraud prevention service Cifas reporting a 17 per cent increase in identity fraud in the first quarter of the year.
However, the number of identity frauds foiled by Cifas members has also risen by over half, with two-thirds of frauds identified at the application stage, up from only 50 per cent at the same time last year.
"While it is pleasing for our members that so many cases are detected in advance, the continued threat of identity fraud is very worrying for individuals," commented Cifas chief executive Peter Hurst.
"Every impersonation involves an innocent victim. Many have already been the subject of street crime, burglary or assault and had personal documents stolen. This increase highlights the need for all parties - in both the public and private sectors - to work together to combat this pernicious crime."
