Credit cards part of everyday living

22 May 2006

Credit cards are becoming more and more a part of daily life, with cards being used to buy over half of everyday purchases.

Groceries, petrol and household items are just some of the everyday things that Britons are increasingly buying with their plastic, with latest figures showing that credit card spending in this area has increased by four per cent in the last three months.

No longer just for big purchases, the average British consumer will spend £363 on their card over the next three months on everyday items for the house and car.

"Credit cards have changed enormously over the years and so has the way that people use them. Savvy credit card customers are taking advantage of credit card incentives and beginning to use their cards more and more for everyday purchases," said Patrick Muir of Morgan Stanley, which commissioned the survey.

"Britons are increasingly more likely to shop around and see how they can be rewarded for their spending with loyalty schemes such as cash back, in addition to taking advantage of the interest-free period that many cards offer."

Those in their thirties will flash their plastic the most, putting the highest proportion of everyday spending (58 per cent) on their credit cards.
