Brits heading for debt advice

09 January 2006

Over a tenth of Brits are intending to seek out professional advice to help them claw their way out of debt this year, according to a survey.

One Advice has shown that 13 per cent of the population is likely to accept defeat in assuming sole control over personal finance, while another 203,000 may have to go a step further and announce themselves to be bankrupt.

Chris Holmes, the firm's chief executive, said: "There are a disturbing number of people with unsecured debts, which they are finding difficult to manage.

"Given this, it is not surprising that so many people are looking for professional help, and the start of the New Year is a good time to start trying to sort out any money problems you have. Indeed, January is usually the busiest time of the year for debt advisers."

London has the largest proportion of citizens likely to hunt for debt advice in the near future, with 18 per cent considering such a move. Scotland, East Anglia and Northern Ireland saw the smallest figures, with only eight per cent from each region considering taking professional advice.
