Britons more worried about ID theft than burglary

21 March 2006

ID fraud is the second largest crime and safety concern for people living in the UK, claims new research.

The research was commissioned by Legal & General Insurance for their Safety Uncovered Index and found that the average Briton was more worried about identity crime than car vandalism or burglary.

With identity theft costing the British economy £1.7 billion a year, according to Home Office figures, one in five people (20 per cent) said that they worried more about it than any other type of crime.

Women were found to be slightly more concerned with identity crime than men, with 11 per cent of women giving it as their largest crime fear, as opposed to ten per cent of men.

The research found that yob culture and antisocial behaviour was the biggest crime concern for Britons.

Research unveiled last week into the problems suffered by victims of identity crime found that victims wanted to see more information made available on what to do if you become a victim, as well as an improvement in police rates for prosecuting offenders.
