Bank introduces SMS fraud protection

24 May 2006

A high street bank is to protect its customers from online banking fraud via text message.

As part of its new online anti-fraud initiative, customers of Barclays will be notified via SMS message when a new third party payment is set up on their account.

The free service will enable customers to spot if a transaction is suspicious at an early stage and to protect themselves from online fraud.

Fraudsters are using increasingly sophisticated methods to commit identity theft, claims the bank, using tactics such as phishing and Trojan software to fraudulently get hold of people's personal and security information.

"Online banking has revolutionised the way people manage their money and we are constantly working to keep our services as secure as possible," said director of electronic banking at Barclays, Barnaby Davis.

"Because online banking is so secure fraudsters have turned their attention to customers and target them to specifically get their security details for their accounts."

Barclays will also offer its customers free anti-virus software which will prevent viruses being downloaded onto a computer, scan emails and protect against spyware.
